9- Immigration Services
Application for Temporary Resident Visa for Working Purposes
Any foreigner who decides to reside in Mexico for more than 180 days may apply for his/her visa based on a job offer from a Mexican company or natural person contracting him/her; the company thus files an application to the National Institute of Immigration (INM) for the visa to be issued in the name of the foreigner.
Immigration Document Exchange
Once the foreigner has his/her visa issued by the authority of any Mexican Consulate outside Mexico, he/she shall submit an application for issuance of immigration document exchange before the National Institute of Immigration upon re-entering Mexican territory, and the National Institute of Immigration shall issue his/her temporary resident visa.
Application for and Renewal of Company Employer Registration Certificate
Any Mexican legal or natural person that decides to employ a foreigner as part of its staff shall have a document called Employer Registration Certificate; such document is issued by the National Institute of Immigration on an annual basis jointly with the yearly tax return of the previous year.
Change to Temporary Resident on Grounds of Family Unity
These proceedings may be filed by any foreigner who decides to reside in Mexico and request his/her temporary resident visa on grounds of family unity; this might be the case of a person who has a marital bond with a Mexican person or a foreigner having a permanent or temporary resident visa, or minors whose parents have a temporary resident visa, or a mother or father of a person who has a temporary resident visa.
Change to Permanent Resident on Grounds of Family Unity or Time Considerations
The foreigner who has a temporary resident visa for working purposes may apply for a permanent resident visa after having resided in Mexico for 4 years with the current immigration document; furthermore, any individuals who have applied for a temporary resident visa on grounds of family unity may request the change after two years in the event his/her Mexican spouse has a permanent resident visa.
Temporary Resident Visa Renewal
The temporary resident visa shall be initially valid for one year; after such term, it may be renewed for one, two or up to three years.
Immigration Document Replacement
In the event of loss or wear and tear of the immigration document, the person shall apply for replacement thereof so that a new immigration document is duly issued.
Notice of Changes by Permanent or Temporary Residents
Foreigners who have a permanent or temporary resident visa shall notify the National Institute of Immigration of any changes related to domicile marital status, nationality, name or place of work, within 90 days.
Application for Departure and Return Permit
If the foreigner has filed an immigration proceedings before the National Institute of Immigration and, therefore, does not have his/her original immigration document, in the event he/she needs to leave the country, he/she shall apply for a special departure and return permit to be able to leave the country without his/her original visa and stay outside the country for up to 60 days.
Application for Work Permit
The foreigner who has obtained a temporary resident visa on grounds of family unity may apply for a work permit to the National Institute of Immigration in order to be able to conduct business in the country.
